Water-Based vs Silicone Lube: Which Should You Use?

Water-based lube works with everything. Silicone lube lasts longer. Here is when to use each, with a side-by-side chart.

Lube makes sex and toy play more comfortable, and the right one depends on what you are using it with. Here is the short version: water-based lube works with everything, silicone lube lasts longer, and the two are best for different jobs.

Water-based lube

Water-based lube is the most versatile choice. It is safe with every toy material, including silicone, and with latex and polyisoprene condoms. It washes off easily and does not stain sheets.

  • Best for: toys of every material, condoms, and anyone with sensitive skin.
  • Trade-off: it absorbs and dries faster, so you may need to reapply. A few drops of water can revive it.
  • Look for: short ingredient lists and formulas without glycerin or parabens if you are prone to irritation.

Silicone lube

Silicone lube is slick, long-lasting and waterproof. A little goes a long way, and it does not dry out, which makes it popular for longer sessions and for play in the shower.

  • Best for: long sessions, water play, and toys made of glass, stainless steel or hard plastic.
  • Trade-off: it can break down the surface of silicone toys over time, and it takes soap and water to wash off.
  • Condoms: it is generally safe with latex condoms. Check the label to be sure.

Hybrid and oil-based lubes

Hybrid lubes blend water and silicone for a creamy feel that lasts longer than water-based lube. Oil-based lubes and natural oils feel great for massage, but oil can weaken latex condoms, so avoid them with latex.

How to test silicone lube with a silicone toy

If you want to use silicone lube with a silicone toy, test a small dab on the base of the toy first. Leave it for a few minutes and wipe it off. If the surface feels tacky or changes texture, stick with water-based lube for that toy.

Rule of thumb: when in doubt, choose water-based. It is the one lube that is safe with every toy we sell.
