Buying guide

How to choose blindfolds and gags

Sensory play works best when the gear is comfortable enough to forget about. Start with the sense you want to restrict, then think about fit and safety.

01

Blindfolds and masks

A satin or padded blindfold is the gentlest entry point. Blindfolded sex is often the first step couples take into sensory play because it builds anticipation without any pain. Contoured, padded designs block light better than flat ties. A BDSM mask or bondage mask covers more of the face; check that eye and nose openings sit comfortably and that the mask has an easy release.

02

Ball gags and other mouth gags

  • Ball gags: a silicone ball on an adjustable strap. Breathable versions have holes that make breathing and swallowing easier.
  • Bit gags: a bar shape that sits further forward and is easier on the jaw.
  • Open-mouth styles such as the spider gag hold the mouth open and suit experienced users.

Start with a small ball, around 1.5 inches, and a buckle you can release quickly.

03

Safety basics

A gag takes away your safe word, so agree on a nonverbal signal first, such as dropping an object or tapping three times. Keep sessions short, watch for jaw fatigue and never leave a gagged or restrained person alone. Skip gags if either of you has a cold, a stuffy nose or any trouble breathing through the nose.

FAQ

Blindfolds, Masks and Gags: common questions

Quick answers from our team. Need more help? Call 800-618-6053.

Are ball gags safe?
Ball gags are safe for most adults when used with care. Choose a breathable, appropriately sized silicone ball, agree on a nonverbal stop signal and keep sessions short. Remove the gag right away if breathing feels difficult, and avoid gags entirely when either partner has nasal congestion.
What size ball gag should a beginner use?
Beginners should start with a ball around 1.5 inches in diameter or smaller. A smaller ball reduces jaw strain and makes breathing and swallowing easier. Breathable designs with holes are more comfortable for longer wear, and a quick-release buckle helps you get a secure fit.
How do you use a safe word with a gag?
You cannot speak clearly with a gag in, so agree on a nonverbal signal before you start. Common options are tapping a hand three times, snapping fingers or holding a small object that you drop to stop. Practice the signal once before play begins.
How do you clean a silicone ball gag?
Wash a silicone ball gag with warm water and mild soap or toy cleaner after each use, then let it air dry. Wipe leather or faux leather straps with a damp cloth only, since soaking can damage them. Store the gag in a clean pouch away from other toys.
