How to choose water-based lube

A water-based lubricant is the safest default for sex and toy play. The main choices come down to thickness, ingredients and how long you want it to last between applications.

Thin or thick

  • Thin, liquid formulas feel natural and work well for vaginal sex and with condoms.
  • Gel and cream formulas cling to toys and stay in place, which makes them better for anal play and strokers. See anal lube for thicker options.

Ingredients to check

Some water based lubes contain glycerin, which adds slip and a slightly sweet taste, though some people with sensitive skin prefer to avoid it. Others are paraben-free, fragrance-free or osmolality balanced to be gentler on delicate tissue. If you have sensitive skin, choose a short ingredient list and patch test first. ID Glide water based lubricant is a popular, simple formula.

Toys and condoms

Water-based lubricants are safe with silicone, glass, metal and plastic toys and with latex condoms. That makes them the go-to choice for vibrators and silicone dildos. For a slicker, longer glide on non-silicone toys, compare our silicone lube. Edible water based lubes in our flavored lube range suit oral sex.

Application tips

Apply a thin layer of water based lubricant to both the toy and your body, then add more as needed. If it starts to feel tacky, a few drops of water usually revive the glide. Combining silicone and water based lube on skin is fine, but keep any silicone away from silicone toys.

Water-Based Lube: common questions

Is water based lube safe for silicone toys?
Yes. Water based lube is safe with every toy material, including silicone, glass, metal and plastic. It will not break down a toy's surface the way silicone lube sometimes can. That makes it the safest choice whenever you are unsure what a toy is made of.
Can you mix silicone and water based lube?
You can, and hybrid lubes do exactly that, combining a water base with a small amount of silicone for longer glide. Mixing them yourself on skin is fine, but keep any silicone content away from silicone toys, which it can damage over time.
Why does water based lube get sticky?
Water based lube gets sticky as the water evaporates and leaves behind thickeners such as glycerin or cellulose. Adding a few drops of water usually brings back the glide. Glycerin-free formulas tend to stay smoother as they dry, and thicker gels last longer between applications.
Is water based lube safe with condoms?
Yes. Water based lube is safe with latex, polyisoprene and polyurethane condoms, and it can reduce the friction that leads to breakage. Avoid oil-based products such as lotion or coconut oil with latex condoms, since oil weakens the material and raises the risk of tearing.
